The Language Senior Leaders Listen To (and Why Proverbs Work)

You’ve made the argument. The room understood it.

They still didn’t move.

Sometimes the problem isn’t your idea. It’s the language carrying it.

This is where proverbs come in — and most professionals leave them completely unused.

Not idioms. Proverbs are different. An idiom like “move the goalposts” adds colour. A proverb like “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” adds judgment. One decorates language. The other shifts how people think.

Which is exactly why proverbs show up in leadership moments.

Here’s what that looks like across four roles:

A Sales Director resetting expectations after a slow quarter:

Instead of: “We need to rebuild momentum and focus on the long term.”

Try: “You don’t reap what you haven’t sown.”

Same message. The second one anchors. The first one explains.

A Project Manager under pressure to rush delivery:

Instead of: “If we skip steps now, we’ll create bigger problems later.”

Try: “Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast.”

That reframes speed as discipline, not delay.

A People Manager addressing a performance issue:

Instead of: “One person’s behaviour affects the whole group.”

Try: “One bad apple really can spoil the bunch.”

Suddenly the issue feels collective, not personal.

A Leader pushing back on a risky decision:

Instead of: “I think this approach could create consequences we’re not considering.”

Try: “Short-term wins often come at a long-term cost.”

You’re no longer arguing. You’re warning.

One thing to be careful of: proverbs only work when they’re invisible. Used too often, they sound theatrical. Think of them as punctuation, not paragraphs.

In Italian there’s a saying: il troppo stroppia — too much spoils things.

That applies here too.

Learn proverbs as complete ideas, not word-for-word translations. When you use the right one, you’re not teaching. You’re reminding.

And in business, a well-placed reminder lands far more effectively than an explanation ever will.

Which of these four scenarios sounds most like your week?
